Protection Island, Washington
Protection Island National Wildlife Refuge is located near the mouth of Discovery Bay in the Strait of Juan de Fuca. It is managed as part of the Washington Maritime CompIex that also includes Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge.
Protection Island is closed to the public to protect some of the last remaining undeveloped habitat for many burrow-nesting seabirds in the Salish Sea.
Though I didn't get to travel to Protection Island, I wanted to share with you Keith Ross' beautiful photography of some of the wildlife living at the refuge.
💚 your refuge!

Wildlife Tip: Balloons are fun but after they fly away, they often find themselves on refuges posing a significant choking threat to wildlife. Make sure to properly dispose of balloons or look for fun alternatives that are environmentally safe!
